DescriptionFrom the Trade Bead Market Ledger:
The Manhattan bead references the bead types circulating in early 17th-century Dutch colonial trade. While no single bead can be definitively linked to the 1626 transaction later interpreted as the “purchase” of Manhattan Island, beads formed a visible component of the mixed-goods bundles exchanged between Dutch merchants and Lenape communities. These bundles consistently included axes, knives, kettles, textiles, ammunition, and beads—items recognized across the Hudson region’s Indigenous economies.
