DescriptionThis preparatory sketch for a wood engraved illustration (possibly never published) depicts a Civil War veteran with amputated arm sitting in a chair beside a stove in a small cabin. In his hands a newspaper reads, "Defeat all along the line of battle." Behind him are portraits of Ulysses S. Grant crowned with laurels and Benjamin Harrison. A portrait of Major General Daniel Sickles is turned toward the wall in disgrace. A canteen labeled "US" and a hat hang on the wall.
