DescriptionTwo dogs are tied to metal fixture on building wall shaped like an animal face, with leashes coming out of the mouth. Around the circular fixture reads "Beware of Bennett's Dogs." A man is holding a knife to the leashes, about to cut the dogs loose, and he holds a paper reading "N.Y. Fire Brand" above his head which has smoke coming out of it. To the left of the man’s foot a hat which reads "Horse-Marines" lays upside down on the ground. Building has a sign on it reading "New York / Herald / The Huge Hoax Paper" and one below it reading "Ann ST Broadway". A small donkey wearing a toga and belt reading "Caesar" hangs from the building wall, with a sign next to it reading "Killed by / the N.Y. Herald." To the left of the donkey the wall reads "'The / N.Y. Herald / is the / organ / of / ultramontanis / in America. / Therefore / it is that the / sensational / impudent / N.Y. paper / follows / blindly / the / tendency / of / Jesuitism' / Norddeutsche / Allgemeine Zeitung. / 30 Dec. 1874.'" Below it another quote reads "'The / ultramontanists / we regard / them as mis- / chievous, and / congratulate / ourselves that / in free America / no such / party exists.' / The New York Herald. / Jan. 9. 1875. (Hoax.)" Other quotes and headlines appear behind the man. On the left of composition a quote from The New York "Herald," January 22, 1875 titled "Is it Peace or War?" is typeset in black ink. Captioned "J. G. B., JUN. 'Cry HAVOC, and let slip the Dogs of War.'---SHAKSPEARE. / N.B.---The Public is requested not to be frightened, as they are only Newspaper ---- Pups, and J. G. B., JUN., has let Animals loose before." typeset beneath title in black ink.
