DescriptionDetail shot of fresco The Church as the Path to Salvation (east wall) by Andrea di Bonaiuto da Firenze in the Spanish Chapel (1366-67). The subject of the east wall, which unfolds in several registers and stages has been given many different names. Since the 16th century it has usually been known as "Ecclesia militans" and "Ecclesia triumphans." More recently it has been described as the "Via veritatis," the Church as the Path to Salvation. In addition to the idea of making the observer aware, via images, of the official church and its institutions as the true path to salvation, the intention was also to emphasize, among the institutions of the Church, the Dominican order and its work (Source : https://www.wga.hu/html_m/a/andrea/firenze/spanish/2east02.html, accessed 6/20/2023). This is a head shot of a figure in white cloth located at the bottom center of the fresco which is suspected to be a portrait of Cimabue by the previous owner of this print.Since the photographed fresco in the Cappellone degli Spagnoli, Santa Maria Novella was painted by Andrea di Bonaiuto da Firenze, attribution to Simone Martini from inscription (pencil) at the back of the print is not correct.
