Skip to main contentBiographyBorn in Hamilton, Texas, Carl Rice Embrey holds an MFA from the University of Texas, Austin, where he learned to paint in the Abstract Expressionist mode, before transitioning to his signature realistic style. His meticulously rendered scenes result from his technical proficiency with acrylic paint, introduced to him by fellow San Antonio artist, Reginald Rowe (1920-2007).
Embrey recalls: "Aunt Edith Rice had studied art for two years at the University of Texas in 1913 and 1914. One time, I remember distinctly, she brought out a very small box. She opened it up and showed it to me, little boxes of tiny tubes of paint, brushes, and so forth, and she says, "Buddy, this is something you can always do."
