Skip to main contentBiographyNewton A. Wells was born in Lisbon, New York in 1852. He received a Bachelor of Painting from Syracuse University in 1877 and studied at the Pupil Academy Julien in Paris in 1886. He was an instructor of drawing and geometry at Union College from 1877 to 1879 and, upon leaving Union College, became a professor of drawing at Syracuse University. When he left Syracuse, he became a dean of the school of art at Western Reserve University, but he only held this position for a year before moving to Chicago, where he continued teaching at the collegiate level and pursued his own artistic projects.
In Chicago, Wells painted murals at the University of Illinois, Sangamon County Courthouse, and Englewood High School, as well as the Colonial Theatre in Boston. He also designed the Soldiers’ Monument in Tuscola, Illinois. He also received a number of portrait commissions, but he was primarily a highly regarded muralist.
