DescriptionEtching by Eugen Eduard Schäffer depicting sculptor Konrad Eberhard's unrealized statue design. Eberhard intended for the etching to be distributed at the 300th anniversary celebrations commemorating the death of Albrecht Dürer on April 6, 1828. However, Eberhard lost the statue design contest to Christian Daniel Rauch (1777-1857). Rauch's statue design was erected in Nuremberg and completed in 1840.
In this etching, Albrecht Dürer stands on a plinth. He clutches the fur trim on his coat with his proper right hand (much like an earlier self-portrait) and holds his posthumous publication, The Theory of Proportions, in his left hand.
