DescriptionJohn von Bergen’s sculptures combine abstract and representational forms drawn from the natural environment that refer to the physical forces of nature. Spring Turning incorporates castings of tree branches, maintaining the natural irregularities of their buds, knots, and bark. In addition, von Bergen has incorporated representations of houses or barns, suggestive of a country landscape. The dynamic circular vortex of the work might be read as a representation of the spring breeze or of the natural lifecycle. Von Bergen taught for many years at Hamilton College and was the first full-time director of the Kirkland Art Center. His connection to Central New York is reflected in the materials he used and the environment he evoked in Spring Turning (SOURCE: Wellin Museum permanent collection label, Summer 2016).
