DescriptionAfter the winter trading season in Canton, Western merchants made their way down to Macao, where they often spent the rest of the year with their families. The Portuguese had access to Macao since the 16th century and brought with them religious customs and architecture, such as São Paulo church, visible in the background. This particular scene depicts both Chinese and Westerners interspersed in the harbor landscape. Westerners were barred from moving inward on the Chinese mainland, however.
