Resist dye work. / JAVANESE, XVIII-XIX Century. / In batik work, the cloth is coat with a thin film of / wax poured on at the boiling point; after this hardens / the pattern is incised in the wax with a sharp pointed / instrument. When dipped in the dye the color pene- / trates through the tracing while the cloth, protected / by the wax, retains its original color. When more than / one color is desired the process is repeated."
