DescriptionThe clocktower was built in 1496 by Pietro Lombardo. The lower part forms the entrance to the Merceria. The first story is occupied by the clock, with an immense dial plate, exhibiting the 24 hours, the zodiac signs and the lunar phases. At the middle of the second story, sits a gilted figure of the Virgin and the Child, between two gilted doors, showing hours and minutes. At the third, the lion of St Mark, on blue grown, spreading gold stars. Upon the terrace is a colossal bell on which two gians moors strike the hour. The mchanism of the clock is Gianpaolo and Giancarlo of Reggio and has been repaired in 1757. At the right, the old procuratie in the antique classical style by G. Bergamasco and Bart Buono 15th and 16th century.
