DescriptionThis artwork embodies three aspects that are central to who Craig Zammiello is: the creative life of an artist; over forty years of experience as a highly respected master printer; and exceptional accomplishment as an amateur entomologist. Zammiello created the print displayed here, which is one of a series of four held in the Wellin’s collection, during an artist residency at the LeRoy Neiman Center for Print Studies at the School of the Arts at Columbia University. During this residency, the artist’s exemplary insect collection—which is primarily focused upon Coleoptera, or beetles—was in the process of being accessioned into the collection of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Zammiello created this series in response to an observation that he had never before produced artwork featuring entomological imagery, leading him to choose his four favorite beetles as subject matter. Each print comprises of a depiction of the creature at scale and elements related to its life, such as maps, descriptions, illustrations, flora, and even Victorian postcards.
