DescriptionFrom a series of 28 paintings, one for each line of the lyrical poem "Jawartu" by Sheikh Bamba. According to Allen Roberts: "A first circle of Wolof inscription recounts Amadu Bamba’s quest for perfection during the moments of persecution by French colonial agents, and this is surrounded by an Arabic inscription of a verse from Bamba’s poem 'Jawartu.' Surrounding letters and numbers are drawn from the artist’s mystical associations of letters and numerology."
