It also is a story of a courageous and determined Governmant force spoiling / the Communists' plans. / Beginning about May 5, Communist battalions deployed in the provinces around Saigon, began / sending infiltrators into the city. Hundreds of them, armed with automatic weapons, mortars, / rockets, and ammunition, eluded the city's defenses and got into the Cholon, Gia Dinh, and Go Vap / sections of the capital. Residents of the three sections filed to safety as the infiltrators / moved in and occupied their homes. / It was from these houses that the Government troops had to rout the infiltrators, at the / same time keeping destruction to a minimum. The NVA and VC did not exercise similar restraint. / Their guns, mortors and rockets, fired indiscriminately, killed 433 civilians, wounded 3,600 and / destroyed 16,000 houses. Government forces killed 2,880 NVA and VC soldiers, captured 328 prison- / ers and many weapons. A total of 261 Government troops were killed and 1,032 wounded in the same / period of May 5 - June 6. These figures, announced by the government of Vietnam on June 10, indicate the success of its troops in blocking the Communist plans. / # # # # # / The remaining members, 30 men and one woman, of the badly-beaten Viet Cong 308th main force / Battalion are shown in Cholon after their surrender to Government forces.
