DescriptionPrimarily known as a painter, Lee Hang-Sung became interested in printmaking in the late 1940s or early 1950s. He experimented with a diverse range of printing techniques, including woodcutting, engraving, and silkscreen printing, and became increasingly associated with the advancement of the artform and the development of printmaking as a genre of Korean art. In 1958 he cofounded the Korean Graphic Arts Society in Seoul, and later served as president of the organization, paving the way for many Korean printmakers whose work would come to international attention in subsequent decades. In 1975 he left Korea for Paris, where he continued to work. Mysterious Echo exhibits the artist’s celebrated abstract calligraphic style.
