DescriptionReverend Samuel Gilman Brown was born at North Yarmouth, Maine in 1813. He studied Divinity at Andover Theological Seminary, graduating in 1837, and traveled to Europe from 1838 to 1840. Afterward, he taught at Dartmouth as Professor of Oratory and Belles Lettres from 1840 to 1863 and as Professor of Intellectual Philosophy and Political Economy until 1867, when he left Dartmouth to become President of Hamilton College. He served as Hamilton's president until 1881 and a trustee until his death in 1885. His home was built in 1869, and subsequently became the Delta Phi house.
