DescriptionThis work depicts a bull, rendered abstractly. It was made by the modern American artist Jack Squier in 1952, the same year that he received his MFA from Cornell, where he also taught for many years. Four years after graduating with his MFA, he had his first solo exhibition in New York City. Indicative of mid-century modernism, Squier’s sculptures feature organic, biomorphic forms with an emphasis on curvature. His unique use of different media including metals, resin, and fiberglass highlights his affinity for experimentation. Squier was greatly interested in ancient Western and Eastern cultures, and ancient themes and subjects often inspired his artwork.
