DescriptionAmulets portraying deities, animals, objects, and symbols served protective purposes for both the living and the dead. Many were worn on necklaces and rings to transfer positive properties directly to their wearers. Amulets of the fertility deity Taweret were frequently worn by women for protection during pregnancy and childbirth. Taweret, the goddess of women and children, is often represented with the head and body of a hippopotamus and the tail of a crocodile, and wearing a tripartite wig. (Written by Kayley Boddy '22) Amulet of goddess Taweret (alternatively Taurt, Taueret). Turquoise glaze, loop behind shoulders. Deeply incised lines for details.
