DescriptionThis photograph by Jessie Willcox Smith was likely part of a series of preparatory images used to create Elizabeth Shippen Green’s illustrations for the 1922 edition of "Tales from Shakespeare" by Charles and Mary Lamb. The name "Gertrude" inscribed on the verso of this photograph might refer to the illustrator Gertrude Alice Kay (1884-1939).
Artists Jessie Willcox Smith, Elizabeth Shippen Green, and Violet Oakley were known as the "Red Rose Girls," as the three women lived together at the Red Rose Inn in Villanova, Pennsylvania. They often sought inspiration from each other during their creative endeavors. It is probable that the interior depicted here was at the Red Rose Inn.
