DescriptionContemporary carved wooden "mask" self-portrait of the artist with shell inlay for eyes, in the traditional style of Māori ancestor mask carving (whakairo). The title is Te Timatanga Hou (the Māori language) and translates as "New Beginnings." It depicts the artist in two phases of life, represented by layers. This work is a wall hanging and was never intended to be worn as a mask.
