Verso, center (typed black ink): [passage in French on the left accompanied by English translation on the right] "N.2 - Ponte dei Sospiri" / [French text] / "The bridge of sighs is only a covered passage / between the prisons and the Doge's palace, built in / a bad style by Antonio Contino in 1610, more than / 30 feet abaove the Canal. It is without a peculian in- / terest for history, because state prisoners were kept / in the prisons under the roof of the palace, which / were in no way the < box of burning metal, an ab- / surd assertion of Cooper in his Bravo, but a granary. / Condemnations to death were so rare, that the French / found registered only 14 executions for political cri- / mes from the begining of the century to 1797 (one / in 7 years). The pozzi (dungeon) were disused after / 1607 (See N. 60). The prisons on the right of this / bridge were only for common offenders, they were / also the residence of the 6 magistrats, called Signori / della notte, who held their sessions by night. Byron / rescued the bridge of sighs from oblivion in the 4.th / canto of child Harold." [sic]
