Verso, center: "A.P. wirephoto / NATIONAL GUARD TROOPS HAD BAYONETS FIXED IN CHICAGO YESTERDAY. / [JUL 17 1966]/ Chicago Slums to Be Given Hydrant Use in Hot Weather / CHICAGO, July 16.--(UPI) / --Chicago's riot - wracked / West Side soon will have / spray nozzles on its fire hy- / drants and a citizens com- / mittee to recomment ways / of smoothing police-com- / munity relations. / Mayor Richard Daley has / assured that these things / would be done to ease ten- / sion in the Negro slums and / high-rise housing projects. / Both Daley and the Rev. / Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., / met for 90 minutes yester- / day. / It was a face-saving con- / frontation for both leaders / and police officials were / hopeful that it would help re- / store peace. / Daley also promised park / improvements, but their pact / varely (sic) scratched the surface / of the demands taped on the / doors of the City Hall last / week. / THE MAYOR agreed to / the spray nozzles to allow / children to play in the wa- / ter in hot weather. / Police effort to shut off an / illegally opened hydrant, / started the riots. / Meanwhile, nearly 3,500 / Illinois National DGuardsmen / loitered outside the debris / littered Negro slum area, / confident they had stemmed / the lawlessness that left / two dead of gunshot wounds. / THE COMMANDER said / he planned to send 2,200 men / on truck and foot patrols at / dusk. / Major Gen. Francis Cane / said those left on the streets were young people "playing" / a game of cops and robbers. / The general public is not in- / volved," he said. / He said troops would stay / until the area "has returned / completely to normal."
